Theft by Ground Handling Staff Spurs Urgent Action
MANILA, Philippines — The theft by ground handling staff at Ninoy Aquino International Airport has ignited strong calls for immediate termination of those involved. Senator Raffy Tulfo urged airlines and security agencies to act decisively after a passenger’s jewelry worth P500,000 was stolen but later recovered.
Kimberly Nakamura lost her valuable jewelry at NAIA Terminal 3 on June 28, just after boarding her flight to Singapore. Authorities traced the items through closed-circuit camera footage and successfully retrieved them.
Identifying Suspects and Legal Challenges
Sources said the Department of Transportation has already identified the alleged suspects among the ground handling staff. These individuals were referred to the New NAIA Infra Corporation, the Civil Aeronautics Board, and the respective airlines for further review.
However, Nakamura chose not to press charges since she recovered all her jewelry along with its box. This decision limits the government’s ability to proceed with a criminal case without her consent and affidavit.
Calls for Accountability and Preventive Measures
Despite the absence of a formal complaint, Tulfo emphasized the importance of holding the ground handling staff accountable. He urged airlines and security agencies to sanction the employees involved by terminating their employment. This move aims to send a clear message that theft will not be tolerated in any form.
“Since DOTr cannot pursue a criminal case of attempted theft without the affidavit and consent of the victim, Tulfo urged the airlines and security agencies of people involved to sanction their employees by terminating their employment to ensure that these acts will never be tolerated,” a statement from his office added.
These developments highlight the need for stricter oversight and stronger safeguards for passengers’ belongings at the country’s main gateway. The incident serves as a reminder for airport authorities and private partners to uphold the highest standards of security and integrity.
