Guimaras Tuberculosis-Free Island Initiative Launched
Guimaras is on track to become the Philippines’ first tuberculosis-free island, health officials revealed. This ambitious plan aims to test at least half of the island’s residents every two years to detect and treat tuberculosis (TB) early, accelerating efforts to eliminate the disease.
During a recent media briefing, health leaders shared that the Guimaras tuberculosis-free island project could declare the island TB-free within four to five years. “If we prove that, we will bring the strategy to other parts of the country,” a health official said, emphasizing collaboration with the Department of Health (DOH) and local government units to ensure success.
Screening and Prevention at the Core
The initiative focuses on widespread screening through X-ray testing, encouraging all adults in Guimaras to undergo chest X-rays at least once every two years. Early detection is crucial, as those diagnosed with TB can access free treatment and medication from government health centers.
Household members of TB patients will also be screened. Even if they test negative, they will receive TB preventive treatment (TPT) free of charge to stop the spread of latent infections. “There is a need for preventive treatment; otherwise, we cannot eliminate tuberculosis in this country,” said a health leader involved in the program.
Expanding the Vision to Other Islands
Guimaras is set to lead the way as the first TB-free island, with plans to extend similar efforts to other small islands like Siquijor and Biliran. This targeted approach aims to create TB-free zones that can serve as models nationwide.
Previously, this project was supported by international funding but paused due to financial constraints. Now, local agencies are renewing efforts to continue the program and achieve lasting impact.
Comprehensive Strategies Beyond Treatment
Experts highlight that treating active and latent TB cases alone will not suffice to eradicate the disease. They stress the importance of addressing risk factors and preventing infection through community awareness and health interventions.
With focused testing, treatment, and prevention, Guimaras could set a powerful example in the fight against tuberculosis across the Philippines.
