HD Hyundai Shipyard Reopening Brings Hope to Filipinos
BALANGA, Bataan — The reopening of the HD Hyundai Shipyard in Subic, Zambales is set to create job opportunities for over 4,000 Filipinos, officials reported. This development marks a significant step toward revitalizing the country’s shipbuilding industry and boosting local employment.
During the inauguration ceremony, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. highlighted the shipyard’s crucial role in enhancing the socio-economic status of workers and fostering community progress. “By 2030, we look forward to this yard employing 4,300 Filipinos. That equates to thousands of families with food on the table, thousands of workers with dignity in their craft, and thousands of Filipinos who see shipbuilding as a source of livelihood,” the president stated.
Reviving the Shipbuilding Industry for a Stronger Future
“For decades, even centuries, the Philippines has given the world our finest seafarers. It is only fitting that we also supply the world with excellent vessels to sail on,” Marcos added, emphasizing the country’s rich maritime heritage. Community members noted that this revival aims to restore the Philippines’ status among the world’s leading shipbuilding nations.
Local leaders pointed out that the government’s collaboration with industry partners is focused on rejuvenating the shipbuilding sector to strengthen industries, promote livelihood, and build a more prosperous future for Filipinos.
Historical Context and Future Prospects
Between 2014 and 2018, the Philippines produced up to 2 million gross tons of ships annually. However, industry momentum slowed in 2019. “Today, we raise the sails once more,” the president declared, signaling a new chapter for the sector.
Officials reported that HD Hyundai’s large-scale shipbuilding operations will occupy 200 hectares leased from Agila Subic, a Cerberus portfolio company. Operations are set to begin in January 2026, focusing on offshore wind platform construction and vessel production.
Economic Impact and Community Development
The shipyard reopening is expected to have a ripple effect on the local economy by providing stable employment and enhancing skills development. Workers gain dignity in their craft, while their families benefit from improved livelihoods. Community members expressed optimism about the positive changes this project will bring to Subic and surrounding areas.
Moreover, the presence of the Philippine Navy’s Operating Base alongside HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Subcom, and V2X at Agila Subic strengthens the strategic importance of the site.
