Graduation Ceremonies Proceed Despite Heavy Downpour
Metro Manila faced severe flooding due to heavy rains, yet the much-anticipated graduation ceremonies of the University of the Philippines Manila (UPM) and Far Eastern University (FEU) went ahead as planned. The decision to hold these key events despite the weather disruptions drew both praise and concern from the community.
UPM’s 116th commencement exercises began promptly at 11 a.m. at the World Trade Center in Pasay City. This year, 1,263 students graduated, with over half—54 percent or 682 graduates—earning Latin honors. The university awarded nine summa cum laude, 244 magna cum laude, and 429 cum laude distinctions, reflecting the students’ hard work and dedication.
Safety Assurances Amid Challenging Weather
Officials from UPM stressed that the chosen venue was free from flooding, and the surrounding roads remained accessible. They urged attendees to prioritize safety, stating, “As inclement weather may persist, we urge all attendees to exercise caution and sound judgment when deciding to travel. Please assess any personal or companion-related risks and prioritize safety at all times.”
Similarly, FEU’s three-day commencement, scheduled from July 22 to 24 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Pasay, commenced on time. The university reassured graduates and their families that the ceremonies would continue despite the rain, adding, “We understand that the current weather may prevent some from joining us in person. For those who cannot attend, we will find alternative ways to celebrate your achievements.”
Virtual Livestreams and Mixed Reactions
To accommodate those unable to travel safely, both universities provided livestreams of the events. Many viewers expressed joy and congratulated the graduates in live comments. However, some voiced concerns over the decision to proceed, highlighting the risks posed by ongoing floods and heavy rain when traveling to and from the venues.
One commenter remarked, “I hope there was another option for all the attendees who could not attend the graduation ceremony because of the floods in their areas. All of these graduates want to attend their once-in-a-lifetime college graduation.” Another added, “The heavy rains are expected to continue throughout the day. Attendees may get stranded on their way home from the graduation. I hope the university reconsiders and moves the ceremony to another date.”
Balancing Tradition and Safety
In the face of persistent southwest monsoon rains following the recent tropical storm, educational institutions are challenged to balance tradition with safety concerns. The decision to push through with graduation ceremonies highlights the importance of these milestones for students and their families, despite external challenges.
Local leaders and university officials continue to monitor weather conditions and emphasize the importance of safety first. They encourage graduates and attendees to stay informed and to make prudent decisions regarding travel during adverse weather.
