Southwest Monsoon Brings Heavy Rain Across Philippines
Heavy rain is set to continue affecting many parts of the country due to the southwest monsoon, locally called the habagat. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported that this weather pattern will bring significant rainfall on Tuesday, July 22, and into the following day.
Areas Facing Severe Flooding and Landslide Threats
According to Pagasa’s 11 a.m. heavy rainfall outlook, over 200 millimeters (mm) of rain may fall from Tuesday until noon on Wednesday in Metro Manila, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, and Occidental Mindoro. These areas are expected to experience widespread severe flooding and landslides.
Meanwhile, regions including Pangasinan, Benguet, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Laguna, and Rizal could receive between 100 mm and 200 mm of heavy to intense rain. Pagasa warned that numerous flooding incidents are likely, especially in urban, low-lying, or river-adjacent locations. Landslides are also expected in areas with moderate to high susceptibility.
Moderate to Heavy Rainfall in Several Provinces
Other provinces predicted to have moderate to heavy rainfall, with amounts ranging from 50 mm to 100 mm, include Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Abra, Nueva Ecija, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Palawan, Marinduque, Romblon, Masbate, Sorsogon, Albay, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Antique, Iloilo, Guimaras, and Negros Occidental. Localized flooding may occur mainly in urbanized, low-lying, or river-adjacent areas. Landslides remain a risk in highly susceptible zones.
Urgent Calls for Preparedness and Safety Measures
Authorities and residents are advised to take necessary precautions to protect lives and properties amid these conditions. Disaster risk reduction and management offices are urged to stay vigilant and ready to respond to emergencies.
Monitoring Tropical Developments
Pagasa is also tracking three low-pressure areas (LPAs), two inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and one outside it. One LPA within PAR has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours, which could further affect weather conditions.
The public should remain alert to updates and heed warnings from local officials. As the southwest monsoon continues, heavy rain and associated hazards like flooding and landslides will remain concerns in many regions.
