Heavy Rainfall Forecast from Emong and Habagat Affects 34 Areas
MANILA, Philippines — The ongoing impact of Severe Tropical Storm Emong and the southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat, is set to bring heavy rainfall to 34 areas across the country, including Metro Manila. This heavy rainfall forecast warns of potential flooding and landslides, local authorities said.
According to the latest heavy rainfall outlook, Emong is expected to deliver intense to torrential rains exceeding 200 millimeters in several provinces. These include Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, and Benguet. Meanwhile, habagat is also contributing to similar rainfall conditions in Bataan and Occidental Mindoro.
Torrential Rainfall Risks Severe Flooding and Landslides
Forecasters warned that the torrential rains could trigger widespread severe flooding and landslides in these regions. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and prepare for possible emergencies.
Additionally, areas such as Ilocos Norte, Tarlac, Abra, Mountain Province, and Ifugao are expected to receive heavy rainfall between 100 to 200 millimeters due to Emong. The habagat will similarly bring 100 to 200 millimeters of rain to Metro Manila, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, and Rizal.
“Numerous flooding events are likely, especially in urban, low-lying, or riverside areas,” sources said. Landslides are also probable in zones with moderate to high susceptibility.
Moderate to Heavy Rainfall Seen in Northern and Southern Areas
Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rainfall ranging from 50 to 100 millimeters is forecasted to affect Cagayan, Kalinga, Apayao, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, and Nueva Ecija. The habagat will also bring similar rainfall volumes in Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Palawan, Marinduque, Romblon, Antique, Camarines Sur, Albay, and Sorsogon.
During these periods of moderate to heavy rain, localized flooding may occur, especially in urbanized, low-lying, or riverside communities. Landslides remain a risk in highly susceptible areas.
