Heavy Rainfall Forecast in 36 Areas Due to Emong and Habagat
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has forecast heavy rainfall in Cagayan and 35 other areas on Wednesday, citing the combined effects of Tropical Depression Emong and the southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat.
According to Pagasa’s 11 a.m. heavy rainfall outlook, moderate to heavy rain, ranging from 50 to 100 millimeters, will persist in regions including Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Kalinga, and Apayao. This pattern is directly linked to Tropical Depression Emong’s presence and the habagat.
Tropical Depression Emong’s Current Status
As of 8 a.m., the low-pressure area west of the Babuyan Islands intensified into Tropical Depression Emong. By 10 a.m., Emong was located approximately 115 kilometers west-northwest of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, moving west-southwest at 35 kilometers per hour.
The tropical depression carries maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching up to 55 kilometers per hour. Due to these conditions, Pagasa raised tropical cyclone wind signal no. 1 in several areas, including Ilocos Norte, parts of Ilocos Sur, northwestern La Union, and western Pangasinan.
Southwest Monsoon Brings Intense Rainfall
Aside from Emong, the southwest monsoon or habagat will continue to cause heavy to intense rainfall across other parts of Luzon and nearby islands. Areas such as Pangasinan, La Union, Benguet, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, and Rizal are expected to receive between 100 to 200 millimeters of rain from Wednesday through Thursday noon.
Furthermore, more than 200 millimeters of rain is anticipated in Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro during this period. Moderate to heavy rainfall is also forecast in several other provinces, including Nueva Vizcaya, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Nueva Ecija, Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Palawan, Marinduque, Romblon, Masbate, Sorsogon, Albay, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Antique, and Iloilo.
Flood and Landslide Warnings Issued
Authorities warn that the ongoing heavy rains may cause flooding in low-lying urban areas and locations near rivers. Additionally, landslides remain a significant risk in highly vulnerable areas. Residents in these zones are urged to stay alert and prepare accordingly.
Local leaders noted the importance of monitoring weather updates and following safety protocols amid these conditions.
