Heavy Rainfall Forecast Hits Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas
Officials reported that moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in parts of the Bicol region and Eastern Visayas on Monday due to a low pressure area (LPA). This weather disturbance is forecasted to bring significant rain, with some areas receiving between 50 to 100 millimeters.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) issued its early morning heavy rainfall outlook, highlighting the provinces set to experience the most intense rain. The key areas include Albay, Sorsogon, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, and Southern Leyte.
Rainfall Outlook Extends Through Midweek
From Tuesday to Wednesday, the LPA will continue to affect other provinces with moderate to heavy rainfall. On Tuesday, areas such as Aurora, Rizal, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, and Sorsogon are forecasted to receive substantial rain.
By Wednesday, the rainfall will persist mainly over Aurora, Rizal, Quezon, and Camarines Norte. Community members noted the need for preparedness as the rains could impact daily activities and transportation.
Southwest Monsoon Brings Additional Rainfall
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat, will cause moderate to heavy rainfall in Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, Antique, and Negros Occidental from Tuesday through Wednesday. Local leaders advised residents in these areas to stay alert for possible flooding and landslides.
Authorities warned that flooding is likely in urbanized, low-lying, or river-adjacent areas. Furthermore, landslides could occur in highly susceptible mountainous regions. Officials emphasized that rainfall amounts may be higher in elevated terrains, with previous rains potentially worsening the situation.
Tracking the Low Pressure Area
Weather specialists reported that the LPA was located approximately 365 kilometers east of Maasin City in Southern Leyte as of early Monday morning. The system is moving generally northwest and may cross Central Luzon or the Eastern Visayas-Southern Luzon area in the coming days.
Experts noted that while the LPA has a slim chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours, it will still bring heavy rainfall as it approaches the landmass. Residents and local officials are urged to monitor updates and take necessary precautions.
