Heavy Rains Forecast in Luzon Due to Typhoon Emong

MANILA, Philippines — A wet and rainy weekend is expected across Luzon until Sunday evening, July 27, as Typhoon Emong (international name: Co-may) combines with the southwest monsoon or “habagat,” local sources said. The heavy rains are forecast to affect nearly all parts of Luzon, bringing significant impacts.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) warned residents to prepare for possible floods and landslides in vulnerable areas. Emong made landfall near Agno, Pangasinan, at 10:40 p.m. on Thursday, according to the latest updates.

Pagasa’s heavy rainfall outlook from Thursday evening, July 24, to Friday evening, July 25, highlights areas expecting more than 200 millimeters of rain, including Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Abra, Benguet, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro.

Regions forecasted to receive between 100 and 200 millimeters of rainfall during this period include Mountain Province, Ifugao, Pampanga, Cavite, Batangas, Tarlac, and Laguna. From Friday evening, July 25, to Saturday evening, July 26, heavy rains between 100 and 200 millimeters will continue in Ilocos Norte, Apayao, Batanes, Cagayan, Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, La Union, Pangasinan, and Benguet. Other areas like Ilocos Sur, Abra, Kalinga, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Nueva Vizcaya, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, Rizal, Oriental Mindoro, and Palawan will receive between 50 and 100 millimeters.

Finally, from Saturday evening, July 26, to Sunday evening, July 27, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro will still experience rainfall between 50 and 100 millimeters.

Typhoon Emong’s Path and Strength

Emong is currently moving slowly eastward, packing maximum sustained winds of up to 120 kilometers per hour with gusts reaching 165 kph. Meteorological projections indicate the typhoon will cross Northern Luzon and enter the Babuyan Channel by Friday morning or noon.

Local authorities advise residents to stay alert and monitor weather updates closely as the combined effects of Typhoon Emong and the “habagat” may cause dangerous conditions, including flooding and landslides.
