Classes Suspended amid Heavy Rains in South Cotabato Towns
Disaster officials in South Cotabato have suspended classes in all levels across at least eight towns due to heavy rains and strong winds that began Sunday night. The decision aims to protect students and residents as the severe weather conditions continue to affect the province.
The towns impacted by the class suspension include Surallah, Tampakan, Polomolok, Tboli, Tupi, Norala, Banga, and Lake Sebu. Additionally, the chartered city of General Santos also halted classes amid the adverse weather.
Warnings on Flash Floods and Landslides
Authorities issued advisories cautioning the public about the possibility of flash floods and landslides. “Possible flash floods and landslides may happen. Avoid going to areas that were declared prone to flash floods and landslides, take precautionary measures when going out of your homes,” a local disaster risk reduction and management office said.
The weather bureau reported that easterly winds are currently affecting Southern Luzon, the Visayas, and the entire Mindanao region. This weather pattern, combined with Tropical Storm Tapah (formerly Lannie), has contributed to the heavy downpour across the area.
Calls for Vigilance and Evacuation
Rolly Aquino, the provincial disaster risk reduction and management officer, urged municipal disaster officers to keep a close watch on overflowing rivers and waterways. He emphasized the importance of early action to protect communities from potential disasters.
“We appeal to residents living near river banks and landslide-prone areas to immediately evacuate when the rains continue,” Aquino told local sources during an interview.
Traffic Disruption in North Cotabato
Meanwhile, in North Cotabato province, heavy rains caused a traffic standstill along the national highway in Barangay Skyline Greenhills, President Roxas town. The uphill section of the road transformed into a rushing river, forcing passenger vehicles and private cars to wait for hours.
Strong downstream waters carried large boulders, prompting authorities to prevent motorists from crossing due to risks of rockfalls and landslides. Local disaster officials directed drivers to use a diversion road until the debris is cleared and water levels recede.
Stay Prepared and Informed
Residents are encouraged to stay alert and follow official advisories as the heavy rains continue to impact South Cotabato and surrounding areas. Taking necessary precautions and heeding evacuation orders can save lives during these hazardous weather events.
