Flooding Hits Camarines Sur Due to Heavy Rains
LEGAZPI CITY — Continuous heavy rains caused flooding in several villages across Camarines Sur on Monday afternoon, local leaders noted. The severe weather conditions have raised concerns for residents in low-lying areas as floodwaters rose quickly.
In Iriga City, knee-deep floods submerged the villages of San Roque and San Francisco. As a result, some schools opted for early dismissal to ensure the safety of their students. Authorities reported that floodwaters began rising around 3 p.m. and started to recede by evening.
Flood Impact in Naga City and Nabua Town
In Naga City, officials revealed that 19 classrooms at Julian B. Meliton Elementary School in Barangay Concepcion Pequeña were flooded by 4 p.m. The city’s mayor confirmed that monitoring teams were dispatched to closely watch the affected villages, especially those prone to flooding.
Meanwhile, Mayor Fernando Simbulan of Nabua town urged village officials to carry out pre-emptive evacuations if early signs of flooding or landslides appear. This precaution aims to protect residents from potential hazards brought by the heavy rains.
Weather Advisory and Safety Measures
Earlier in the day, at approximately 12:45 p.m., the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Southern Luzon issued a thunderstorm advisory. The warning highlighted the possibility of moderate to heavy rains accompanied by lightning and strong winds affecting Camarines Sur, Albay, Catanduanes, Northern Samar, and Oriental Mindoro.
Local officials continue to urge residents to stay alert and follow safety protocols amid the ongoing rains. “Kung may babala tungkol sa baha at landslide, dapat agad na magpa-evacuate,” a local leader emphasized.
Authorities remain vigilant, closely monitoring weather updates and coordinating responses to minimize the impact on communities. As floodwaters recede, recovery efforts are expected to begin swiftly to restore normalcy.
