Heavy rains trigger lahar flow anew in Albay villages
LEGAZPI CITY — Heavy rains have triggered another lahar flow in villages near the Mayon Volcano in Guinobatan town, Albay, officials reported on Thursday afternoon.
Joy Maravillas, head of the municipal disaster risk reduction and management office, said the flooding mixed with volcanic debris made the road in Barangay Masarawag impassable to light vehicles as of 3 p.m. She added that the road connecting Masarawag and Maninila villages was also blocked for all types of vehicles.
Clearing operations to begin soon
Albay’s 3rd District Representative Raymond Adrian Salceda said teams will be deployed promptly to clear affected areas and restore safe passage. Community members expressed concern over the recurring lahar flows, which disrupt daily life and transportation.
Earlier this month, on August 13, thunderstorms caused flooding and lahar flows that impacted Zones 4, 6, and 8 of Barangay Masarawag as well, local leaders noted.
Governor issues safety advisory for residents
In response, Governor Noel Rosal advised residents in the affected villages to exercise caution and take precautionary measures against flash floods and lahar flows. He urged the public to avoid crossing swollen rivers and stay vigilant, especially those living in flood-prone areas or near riverbanks.
Weather updates and warnings
At 2 p.m. on Thursday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported moderate rains accompanied by lightning and strong winds over Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, Albay, Northern Samar, and Romblon.
Pagasa also issued a yellow rainfall warning for Albay, Camarines Sur, and Camarines Norte, signaling that moderate rains may cause flooding in low-lying areas.
Residents and travelers are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and heed official warnings to ensure safety during this period of heavy rains and volcanic activity.
