Heavy Rains Trigger Mudflows Blocking Batanes Roads
Heavy rains and strong winds triggered mudflows that blocked major roads in Batanes towns on Wednesday morning, officials reported. The Batanes Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) confirmed that the affected areas include Uyugan and Mahatao, where travel has become hazardous due to debris and rockfalls.
Road Closures in Uyugan
In Uyugan, the Interior Road in Barangay Imnajbu was completely closed to all vehicles. Local authorities advised motorists to avoid the route until clearing operations can safely commence. The PDRRMO emphasized that road clearing will begin once weather conditions improve.
Rockfalls and Hazards in Mahatao
Meanwhile, Mahatao experienced significant rockfalls along various roads on Batan Island. Areas such as Ahaw/Blue Lagoon, Chatapuyan, Shelter Port, and Paderes Viewpoint were reported to have debris obstructing the pathways. Community members were urged to exercise extreme caution when traveling in these locations.
Safety Advisories and Precautions
Travelers should stay updated on advisories from local authorities to avoid hazards caused by mudflows and rockfalls. The PDRRMO reminded the public to monitor weather updates closely and to prioritize safety when moving through affected regions.
“Travelers should exercise extreme caution in these areas. Stay updated on advisories from local authorities,” a spokesperson reiterated.
