Bawat Bata Makakabasa Program Sees Strong Student Engagement
MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Education (DepEd) has reported a remarkable turnout and notable improvement in both English and Filipino proficiency among 70,000 students participating in the Bawat Bata Makakabasa Program (BBMP) during the summer break. This initiative aims to elevate early reading skills among young learners.
According to local education officials, the program achieved an average attendance rate of 80.83 percent over a five-week period. The BBMP focused on students from Grades 1 to 3 who struggled with reading, employing phonics-based instruction coupled with daily 20-minute reading sessions. These efforts have led to measurable gains in literacy.
Improved Reading Proficiency Highlights Program Success
Third-grade students showed significant progress, with 32.85 percent reaching grade-level proficiency in Filipino and 26.04 percent in English. Furthermore, there was a marked decrease in the number of students classified as “low emerging” readers—the lowest tier in reading and comprehension skills from the previous school year.
One local educator shared, “Nakikita namin ang pagbabago sa mga estudyante, lalo na sa kanilang kumpiyansa sa pagbasa.” This reflects the growing confidence and skill among young learners thanks to the program.
Program Implementation and Impact
Launched on May 8 in the Zamboanga Region, the Bawat Bata Makakabasa Program is part of DepEd’s broader strategy to strengthen reading comprehension in early education. By focusing on phonics and consistent practice, the program addresses the root causes of reading difficulties among early-grade students.
Officials noted that the program’s success sets a promising precedent for future literacy initiatives, emphasizing the importance of targeted summer learning programs to combat gaps in reading skills.
With continued support and participation, the BBMP aims to expand its reach and further improve literacy rates among Filipino children nationwide.
