Hot pursuit operations continue after Maguindanao clash
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) announced on Sunday that hot pursuit operations continue after a deadly firefight in Pandag, Maguindanao del Sur, which resulted in two fatalities. Authorities are actively pursuing the armed groups involved in the incident.
AFP spokesperson Colonel Francel Margareth Padilla shared in an interview that “patuloy pa po ang operations natin,” emphasizing that the pursuit is ongoing and full details cannot yet be disclosed beyond what was shared previously.
Details of the deadly encounter
The Philippine Army reported that the clash happened on Saturday between two armed groups. One group is linked to the chairman of Barangay Lower Dilag, while the other is led by Morsid Mamalinta.
Among the casualties was a candidate for municipal councilor. The identity of the other person killed remains unknown. Additionally, one person was injured and seven others were arrested following the confrontation.
AFP prepares for election security
Padilla also explained that the AFP may increase troop deployment in areas facing serious threats, especially with the May 12 national and local elections approaching. “Depending on the category of the area, doon din nagde-depende ang deployment natin,” she said.
This means that areas with higher threat levels will see a larger AFP presence to maintain peace and order.
AFP operating in dual mode during elections
She further stated that the AFP is currently working in both combat and election modes. “Monitored threats from local terrorist groups and lawless elements are being addressed with appropriate contingency measures as we work in dual mode—election and combat mode,” Padilla added.
These efforts aim to ensure safety and security during the election period while continuing to address ongoing conflicts in vulnerable areas.
