House Congratulates Pope Leo XIV on Historic Election

The House of Representatives warmly congratulated His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on his election as the 267th Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church. This collective expression of support came through House Resolution No. 2301, adopted last week, and authored by key congressmen led by House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

The House highlighted Pope Leo XIV’s election as a pivotal moment in the continued strengthening of the Catholic faith worldwide. They celebrated his role as a source of inspiration for Catholics everywhere.

Pope Leo XIV’s Historic Milestones

Elected on May 8, 2025, Pope Leo XIV—formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost—made history as the first American Pope and the first Supreme Pontiff from the Order of Saint Augustine. He took the name Leo XIV, inspired by Pope Leo XIII, who was known for his transformative social teachings advocating workers’ rights and fair wages.

The House praised the new pope’s choice of the episcopal motto, “In Illo Uno Unum” or “In the One, we are one,” drawn from St. Augustine’s reflections on Psalm 127. This motto embodies unity and communion within the Church, reflecting the Pope’s lifelong dedication to faith, dialogue, and inclusivity.

Leadership and Vision of Pope Leo XIV

The resolution described Pope Leo XIV as a beacon of harmony and peace, emphasizing his role as the Supreme Pastor and unifier of the people of God. His leadership aims to promote unity across Christian and non-Christian communities, fostering a shared journey rooted in human fraternity and global peace.

Born in Chicago to a diverse family with French, Italian, and Spanish roots, Pope Leo XIV entered priestly life with the Order of Saint Augustine in 1981. He was ordained in 1982 and pursued advanced theological studies, earning a Master of Divinity and a Doctorate in Canon Law.

Ecclesiastical Journey and Global Impact

Throughout his career, Pope Leo XIV served in various leadership roles, including Prior of his Augustinian province in Chicago and later as Prior General of the entire Augustinian Order, serving two terms. His missionary work in Peru as Bishop of Chiclayo and Apostolic Administrator of Callao further shaped his pastoral approach.

Before becoming pope, he led the Dicastery for Bishops and the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. His elevation to Cardinal-Bishop of Albano in early 2025 marked the final step before his election as Supreme Pontiff.

House Resolution Honors Pope’s Service

The House lauded the Pope’s decades of dedication to theological scholarship and missionary service. Lawmakers emphasized his role in bridging divides and guiding people toward peace and unity.

Pope Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis, who passed away last April at age 88. The House will send a copy of the resolution to the Apostolic Nunciature in Manila for delivery to the Holy See, symbolizing the Philippines’ support and prayers.

Co-authors of the resolution included prominent representatives across the political spectrum, reflecting broad consensus in honoring the new pontiff.
