House Honors Filipino Athletes for Historic International Wins
The House of Representatives recently adopted several resolutions celebrating Filipino athletes who have made remarkable achievements on the international stage. Among those commended was tennis prodigy Alexandra “Alex” Eala, whose outstanding performance has captured global attention.
The House also recognized the Philippine Men’s Curling Team and 1-Pacman Party-list Representative Mikee Romero for their teams’ groundbreaking victories abroad. These commendations came as the chamber resumed sessions after a four-month recess, highlighting the nation’s growing impact in global sports.
Alexandra Eala’s Historic Tennis Breakthrough
At just 19 years old, Alexandra Eala carved her name in history by becoming the first Filipina to enter the Top 100 of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings. Entering the 2025 Miami Open as a wild card ranked No. 140, she amazed the tennis world by defeating three Grand Slam champions. She outplayed world No. 25 Jelena Ostapenko, world No. 5 Madison Keys, and world No. 2 Iga Swiatek before narrowly losing to world No. 4 Jessica Pegula.
Following the tournament, Eala rose to World No. 72, making her the highest-ranked Filipina in WTA history and the second highest-ranked teenager globally. Before this, she made history by winning the 2022 US Open Girls’ Singles title, a first for the Philippines.
House Speaker Martin Romualdez, author of House Resolution No. 2287, praised her achievements: “For her impressive performance in the 2025 Miami Open and numerous achievements in tennis, 19-year-old Alexandra Maniego Eala deserves the highest commendation. Her unwavering dedication, exceptional talent, and relentless perseverance serve as an inspiring testament to the power of hard work and the right opportunities.”
Philippine Men’s Curling Team’s Unprecedented Victory
The Philippine Men’s Curling Team brought home the country’s first gold medal in the 9th Asian Winter Games held in Harbin, China, last February. This historic win also marked the highest achievement by any Southeast Asian nation in curling, securing a slot in the 2026 Winter Olympics pre-qualifiers.
The team, composed of Marc Angelo Otida Pfister, Enrico Gabriel Otida Pfister, Alan Beat Frei, Christian Patrick Haller, Benjo Delarmente, Miguel Gutierrez, and Coach Jessica Sarah Pfister, has an inspiring story. Its members hail from diverse professions including construction, electrical work, business, and banking.
House Resolution No. 2285 applauded their victory: “The excellent performance of the Philippine Men’s Curling Team during the 9th Asian Winter Games deserves utmost distinction and commendation for bringing honor and glory to the Philippines.”
Mikee Romero’s Polo Triumph in the US
The chamber also commended 1-Pacman Party-list Rep. Mikee Romero for leading Globalport to a 15-10 win over defending champion Park Place in the CV Whitney Cup in Wellington, Florida. This marked the first time an Asia-based team competed and won in this prestigious event.
The resolution HR No. 2283 recognized Romero’s historic feat: “It was a historic win for Globalport… and a greater victory for Honorable Romero as the first Filipino player to score a goal in the opening leg of three prestigious events making up the Gauntlet of Polo.”
Romero, serving his final term in Congress and a former deputy speaker, has long supported various sports including basketball, volleyball, and baseball. His leadership significantly advanced polo development in the Philippines.
Unified Support from House Leaders
These resolutions were principally authored by House Speaker Romualdez, alongside senior lawmakers from various districts and party-lists who collectively applauded the athletes’ outstanding contributions. Deputy Speaker David Suarez also co-authored the resolution honoring Eala.
The House’s recognition of these Filipino athletes highlights the nation’s rising prominence in diverse international sports arenas. Their triumphs inspire Filipinos nationwide and showcase the power of dedication and unity.
