House Honors Mikee Romero and Philippine Sports Achievements

House Commends Mikee Romero and Philippine Sports Excellence

The House of Representatives has officially recognized Mikee Romero, the 1Pacman partylist congressman and sports advocate, alongside rising star Alex Eala and the Philippine Men’s Curling Team. Through a series of resolutions, they celebrated these figures for elevating Philippine sports on the international stage.

The recognition highlights how Mikee Romero has opened new avenues for the country, particularly in polo. Romero’s leadership with the GlobalPort team led to groundbreaking wins, including a stunning 15-10 victory over the defending champions Park Place at the CV Whitney Cup in Wellington, Florida. This marked the first time an Asia-based team competed and triumphed in this prestigious tournament.

“It was a historic win for GlobalPort… and a greater victory for Honorable Romero as the first Filipino player to score a goal in the opening leg of three prestigious events making up the Gauntlet of Polo,” the resolution noted. Romero, now in his final congressional term, was also praised for his support of various sports such as basketball, volleyball, and baseball, and for boosting polo’s growth in the Philippines.

Alex Eala Breaks Barriers in Tennis

Similarly, 19-year-old tennis prodigy Alex Eala brought pride to the nation by becoming the first Filipina to enter the Top 100 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings. Her remarkable performance at the 2025 Miami Open propelled her to this historic milestone.

Eala also competed in the main draw of the French Open for the first time, further proving her rising status in global tennis. Her achievements signify a new chapter for Filipino athletes on the world’s courts.

Philippine Men’s Curling Team Makes History

The Philippine Men’s Curling Team also gained recognition for winning the country’s first gold medal in the 9th Asian Winter Games held in Harbin, China, this past February. Their success has brought much honor to the nation and spotlighted a sport less common in the Philippines.

Local leaders noted that these accomplishments reflect the growing strength and diversity of Philippine sports. They emphasized the importance of continued support for athletes who push the country’s name onto the global map.
