House Members Assert Independence from Speaker Romualdez
House members are standing firm that they do not blindly follow the orders of Speaker Martin Romualdez, contrary to recent claims made by Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero. A local lawmaker emphasized on Thursday, June 5, that such an assumption is unfair.
Zambales 1st district Rep. Jay Khonghun stated, “It is unfair for Senate President Escudero to assume that we only follow Speaker Romualdez’s directives blindly because he is neither imposing nor bossy. Marunong siyang makinig, at binibigyan niya ng opportunity ang lahat ng miyembro na magsalita at magpaliwanag.”
Khonghun highlighted that the exact phrase “House members aren’t blindly following” reflects the reality inside the chamber. Lawmakers work collaboratively, relying on mutual trust rather than mere obedience.
Leadership Style Encourages Dialogue and Trust
“We believe in the leadership of the Speaker. Hindi niya tayo pinipilit, hinahayaan niya kaming magdesisyon base sa sarili naming prinsipyo at pananaw,” Khonghun added. This leadership approach fosters an environment where every member can voice their opinions freely, promoting open dialogue and mutual respect.
This inclusive style contrasts sharply with the idea of blind obedience, which is why Khonghun and other members find it hard to accept the Senate President’s statements. “Kaya hindi natin maunawaan at matanggap ang statements ni SP Chiz,” he said.
House’s Legislative Performance Reflects Solid Teamwork
According to local leaders, the House’s legislative achievements speak volumes. Almost all priority bills under the Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) and President Marcos’ Common Legislative Agenda have successfully passed the House.
Khonghun pointed out, “Kung sunod-sunuran lang kami, wala siguro kaming ganitong klaseng output. Pero dahil may maayos na direction at solid na teamwork, nagagawa namin ‘yung trabaho.”
He stressed that unity does not equate to uniform thinking. Rather, it means lawmakers focus on shared goals while making decisions based on their conscience and the needs of their constituents.
