House of Representatives Appoints Lawyer Antonio Bucoy Spokesman
On June 17, the House of Representatives introduced lawyer Antonio Bucoy as the official spokesman for the prosecution panel in Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial. Bucoy took on this role to represent both the congressional prosecution team and private prosecutors.
During his first press conference, Bucoy shared that his appointment as spokesman stems from a commitment to serve the country. “Ano ho ang nag-udyok sa akin na tanggapin ito? Para ho sa bayan…tinanggap ko po after talking to my family,” he said.
Serving Without Compensation for the Country
When asked about his compensation, Bucoy emphasized that he is serving pro bono. “Wala po. Gaya po ng sinabi ko, ako po ay pinakiusapan kung maaring tumulong. Hindi ko na po kinakailangan ng bayad. Para ho sa bayan to. Hindi ho bayad, bayan,” he explained.
Bucoy brings 41 years of experience as a litigation lawyer. He graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Law in 1984 and also teaches corporate and remedial law. Currently, he is the Managing Partner of Bucoy Poblador and Associates Law Offices, specializing in corporate, tax, trial, and appellate litigation.
Advocate for Human Rights and Legal Integrity
Beyond his corporate work, Bucoy is a dedicated human rights lawyer and has been a member of the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) since 1980. He is also affiliated with the Movement of Attorneys for Brotherhood, Integrity, and Nationalism, Inc. (MABINI).
Sources noted that Bucoy was approached by fellow prosecution panel members to take this significant role. His acceptance reflects a blend of professional dedication and patriotic duty.
