House of Representatives Elects More Key Posts as Committees Organize

MANILA, Philippines — The House of Representatives has elected more members to key posts, advancing the organization of its committees in the early days of the 20th Congress. This ongoing process is essential for the chamber to efficiently address pressing legislative matters.

During Monday’s session, Majority Leader and Ilocos Norte 1st District Rep. Ferdinand Alexander Marcos moved to appoint several lawmakers as chairs of important committees. These new leaders include Apayao Rep. Eleanor Bulut-Begtang for agrarian reform, Misamis Occidental 1st District Rep. Jason Almonte for Mindanao affairs, Cotabato 2nd District Rep. Rudy Caoagdagan for veterans affairs and welfare, and Albay 3rd District Rep. Adrian Salceda for food security.

Key Committee Leadership Appointments

Tingog party-list Rep. Yedda Marie Romualdez was chosen as senior vice chairperson of the House Committee on Accounts. Romualdez, who is also the wife of House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, previously chaired this committee during the 19th Congress. Her experience is expected to strengthen the committee’s oversight functions.

Additionally, the following legislators were elected as vice chairpersons of the Committee on Accounts: Mandaue City Rep. Emmarie Ouano-Dizon; Negros Occidental 2nd District Rep. Alfredo Marañon III; Romblon Rep. Eleandro Jesus Madrona; Bukidnon 2nd District Rep. Jonathan Keith Flores; Zambales 2nd District Rep. Doris Maniquiz; Quezon City 6th District Rep. Ma. Victoria Co-Pilar; Pangasinan 4th District Rep. Ma. Georgina de Venecia; and Tarlac 2nd District Rep. Maria Cristina Angeles.

Oath of Office and Remaining Committee Slots

During the same session, Speaker Romualdez administered the oath of office to Senior Deputy Speaker David Suarez, solidifying the leadership team that will steer the House for this term.

Despite these appointments, several standing committees still await their chairpersons. These include disaster resilience; ecology; government enterprises and privatization; government reorganization; health; indigenous cultural communities and indigenous peoples; Muslim affairs; overseas workers affairs; people’s participation; population and family relations; poverty alleviation; senior citizens; suffrage and electoral reforms; sustainable development goals; Visayas development; welfare of children; and women and gender equality committees.

The ongoing organization of these committees is crucial for the House to address diverse issues effectively and represent the interests of all sectors across the nation.
