House of Representatives Prosecution Team Clarifies Role
MANILA, Philippines — The House of Representatives prosecution team insists it is not causing any obstacles in the impeachment process against Vice President Sara Duterte. This comes amid criticism from Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero about the House’s approach.
House spokesperson Atty. Princess Abante addressed the issue directly, stating, “We’re not making it difficult for anyone.” She emphasized the team’s commitment to moving the impeachment trial forward without unnecessary delays.
Senate President’s Criticism and House Response
Senate President Escudero previously accused the House panel of being “stubborn” for allegedly refusing to accept the impeachment court’s order and for not fulfilling related tasks promptly. However, Abante clarified the situation during a press conference on Wednesday.
She explained that on June 11, the last session day of the 19th Congress, the plenary approved a motion to defer the acceptance of the Articles of Impeachment. “That’s why the House has not yet accepted this – because there was a motion approved in plenary,” Abante said.
Issues with Document Delivery
Regarding the entry of appearance, Abante pointed out problems with how the documents were delivered. “The messenger just didn’t properly identify himself, or what document they were giving to the House,” she said. “It was not mentioned if it was an entry of appearance or what it was for.” She stressed that the House did not deny anyone or make things difficult intentionally, but simply sought clarity to ensure a fair trial.
Senate Leader’s Concerns and Future Outlook
Escudero expressed his doubts in a separate press conference about whether the House prosecutors could comply with the impeachment court’s second order. This order instructed the House of the 20th Congress to inform the Senate of its willingness to proceed with the case against Duterte.
He remarked in Filipino, “I don’t want to jump the gun. Given how stubborn they are, since they won’t even accept the pleading, I wouldn’t be surprised if they will actually do that.” He added, “Imagine, accepting the order, the pleading, the answer, even the appearance – they make all of that difficult. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised anymore.”
Despite the tensions, Escudero concluded, “But we will face each other at the right time regarding what they are doing right now.”
