House Speaker Endorses Internet Access for Public Schools
House Speaker and Leyte 1st District Representative Martin Romualdez has voiced strong support for funding initiatives aimed at connecting all public schools to the internet. Local leaders noted that expanding internet connectivity in schools is essential to equip students with the skills needed in today’s digital world.
Current Internet Connectivity in Public Schools
According to officials from the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), about 78 percent of public schools nationwide are already connected to the internet. However, community members reported that roughly 12,000 schools located in remote areas still lack access, highlighting the urgent need to bridge this digital divide.
Importance of Internet Access for Learners
“This is how our people’s taxes should be used for the benefit of our learners, so that they may become competent, skilled, and competitive, and eventually be gainfully employed in fulfilling livelihoods to help them lift their families out of poverty,” Romualdez said in a recent statement. He emphasized that connecting all public schools lays the groundwork for a more inclusive digital economy.
By providing students with reliable internet access, they gain essential tools and skills to thrive in a technology-driven future. This empowerment is crucial for growth and progress, local leaders remarked.
Budget Allocation for Internet and Computerization Programs
The 2026 National Expenditure Program allocates P5 billion to support the DICT’s Free Public Internet Access Program. Additionally, P16.5 billion is set aside for the Department of Education’s Computerization Program, ensuring that schools receive the necessary hardware and connectivity.
House representatives have already begun deliberations on the proposed P6.793-trillion national budget for 2026, which includes these critical education investments, sources said.
Building a Future-Ready Education System
Connecting all public schools to the internet is a strategic step toward creating a future-ready education system that embraces digital technologies. Community members highlighted that this move not only benefits students but also supports teachers and the entire educational infrastructure.
With enhanced connectivity, schools can access a wealth of online resources, improve teaching methods, and foster innovative learning environments that prepare Filipino students for global competitiveness.
