House Speaker Denies 2028 Election Run
House Speaker Martin Romualdez firmly denies any intention to run in the 2028 elections. This was emphasized by House Spokesperson Princess Abante in a strong statement on June 13. She clarified that Romualdez’s words, actions, and decisions show no signs of preparing for a 2028 election campaign.
The four-word keyphrase “plans for 2028 election” is central to the ongoing political discussions as Senator Imee Marcos recently criticized Romualdez during a visit to Malaysia. Marcos was accompanied by Vice President Sara Duterte, Senator Robin Padilla, and other administration figures at an event for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
Romualdez Focuses on Service, Not Politics
Abante highlighted the Speaker’s dedication to service rather than personal gain.
She added that Romualdez is known for making tough decisions that are often unpopular but necessary. This suggests that his leadership style does not align with someone focused on election ambitions.
Critics Question Motives Behind Attacks
Abante questioned why critics persistently target Romualdez despite his absence from 2028 election surveys.
She stressed that Romualdez has been fully occupied steering the House through a productive 19th Congress, leaving him little time for election campaigning.
Addressing Harsh Personal Attacks
Abante acknowledged the weight of personal criticisms but pointed out that bigger challenges face the country today, such as corruption, negligence, and misuse of public funds.
She concluded with a firm message to critics: “Habang abala kayo sa pagpapatawa at pagpapalusot, kami po ay abala sa trabaho. Tahimik man kami — hindi kami bulag.
Political Context and Upcoming Elections
The next presidential election is set for May 2028. Meanwhile, Vice President Sara Duterte, an ally of Senator Marcos, faced impeachment by the House earlier this year over allegations including misuse of confidential funds valued at P612.5 million.
The ongoing political tensions highlight the complex dynamics among key government figures as they prepare for future elections.
