House Speaker Martin Romualdez Gains Wide Support
MANILA, Philippines — In the lead-up to the 20th Congress, a remarkable total of 287 lawmakers have voiced their support for the leadership of House Speaker Martin Romualdez. This strong backing highlights the confidence the majority of members have in his guidance, according to House Assistant Majority Leader and Manila 1st District Representative Ernesto “Ernix” Dionisio Jr.
Dionisio shared this update during a recent press conference when asked whether any challengers have emerged against the current House leader. “With the numbers that are presented in front of us, it seems that there is none,” he said in a mix of English and Filipino.
He further clarified, “They haven’t physically signed. But 287 total expressed their support, and 283 who physically signed the manifesto.” This significant level of endorsement was also confirmed by House Assistant Majority Leader and Lanao 1st District Representative Zia Alonto Adiong.
Securing the Speakership: Numbers Speak Louder
Adiong emphasized that while any member of Congress can run for the Speaker position, the critical factor is securing enough votes. “We have already secured 280 plus signatures supporting Speaker Martin Romualdez to be our Speaker in the 20th Congress,” he said.
Adding to the consensus, Deputy Speaker and Quezon 2nd District Representative David “Jayjay” Suarez declared the speakership race effectively decided. Romualdez has gained the overwhelming backing of the majority, ending speculation about possible contenders.
