House Speaker Martin Romualdez Begins Final Term
TACLOBAN CITY – House Speaker Martin Romualdez officially began his third and final term as the congressman for Leyte’s first district after taking his oath of office on Sunday, June 29. This marks a significant milestone in his political career as he continues to serve his home province.
Romualdez took his oath at around 3 p.m. before Court of Appeals Associate Justice Bautista Corpin at the historic Price Mansion in Tacloban City. His sons, Andrew Julian and Ferdinand Martin Jr., stood by his side during the ceremony, showing family solidarity in their public service.
Family Members Also Take Oaths of Office
Alongside Speaker Romualdez, his son Andrew Julian took his oath as a congressman, representing the Tingog party-list, where he is the first nominee. Another Tingog representative, Jude Acidre, also completed his oath. Meanwhile, Ferdinand Martin Jr. was sworn in as a councilor of Tacloban City, which is a part of Leyte’s first congressional district.
The ceremony also included Romualdez’s nephew, Raymund Romualdez, who took his oath as Tacloban City’s vice mayor. The House Speaker later administered the oaths to the mayors, vice mayors, and councilors of Leyte’s first district, reinforcing the family’s strong political presence in the area.
Notable Absences and Political Legacy
Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez, a cousin of the Speaker and a three-term reelected official, was notably absent from the event. Local leaders noted the ongoing political strength the Romualdez family holds in the region.
Speaker Romualdez’s political journey began in 2007 when he was first elected as a congressman. He served for nine years until 2016, after which his wife, Yedda Marie Romualdez, succeeded him for the same post. He returned to Congress in 2019 and now embarks on his last term.
Commitment to Leyte’s Development

This district includes Tacloban City and the nearby towns of Alangalang, Palo, Babatngon, Tanauan, San Miguel, Santa Fe, and Tolosa. His focus remains on improving infrastructure and the quality of life for his constituents.
The House Speaker’s oath-taking ceremony highlighted the ongoing commitment of the Romualdez family to public service and regional development. Sources noted the family’s continued influence and dedication to advancing Leyte’s interests.
