House Commits to 20,000 New Teaching Positions
MANILA, Philippines — The House of Representatives will continue to secure funding for 20,000 new teaching positions in public schools within the 2026 national budget and beyond, local leaders noted. Speaker Martin Romualdez stressed the importance of this initiative as student numbers rise and teacher shortages persist, especially in far-flung barangays.
Romualdez highlighted that the 20,000 new teaching positions go beyond filling vacancies—they represent a chance to improve lives. “Each position filled means a teacher in front of students who need guidance, and a Filipino family with a new source of income, dignity, and hope,” the House leader stated.
Addressing Teacher Shortages and Community Needs
“This is the kind of intervention that solves multiple problems at once,” Romualdez added. By improving teacher-to-student ratios, easing the burden on overcrowded schools, and creating thousands of new jobs, the program offers comprehensive benefits to education and the economy.
In addition to promising sustained funding, the House will oversee the hiring process closely to ensure it is transparent, swift, and merit-based. Priority will be given to deploying qualified teachers to areas with the greatest need, particularly disadvantaged communities.
“Our goal is not just to fill slots. We want to deploy mentors who are committed, competent, and ready to serve. We are planting the seeds of real, lasting change, classroom by classroom, community by community,” Romualdez explained.
Funding Confirmation and Legislative Support
Earlier, the Department of Budget and Management confirmed funds for the Department of Education’s built-in appropriations under the “New School Personnel Positions” program for fiscal year 2025. According to sources, Congress approved this proposal during budget deliberations, citing its strong educational and economic benefits for the country.
With the 20,000 new teaching positions secured, the government aims to address both the urgent shortage of educators and the broader goal of uplifting Filipino families through stable employment opportunities.
