Huge fire razes residential area in Brgy. Obrero, QC

A huge fire razed a residential area in Barangay Obrero, Quezon City on Saturday night which went on until before dawn on Sunday.

The fire affected an informal settler community on Makabayan Street, according to a report by Rod Vega on Super Radyo dzBB.

It started at 11:20 p.m. and quickly spread since the houses were made of light materials.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the fire reached the third alarm before fire out was declared around 4 a.m.

Firemen had difficulty getting into the affected area due to the narrow alley which served as the only entry and exit to the community.

They also had to put their fire hoses together to connect to the fire hydrants on Timog Avenue and Tomas Morato Avenue.

Barangay officials said at least 100 houses were affected.

More than 143 families have so far sought temporary shelter at three evacuation centers: the old barangay hall, one barangay faciliity, and the Don Alejandro Roces Sr. High School on Roces Avenue.

The BFP is still conducting an investigation as of posting time to determine the cause of the fire and the estimated cost of property damage. —KG, GMA Integrated News
