Human Trafficking Victims Die in Palawan Boat Capsize
A tragic accident off Palawan crushed the hopes of human trafficking victims seeking work abroad. The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) revealed that a motorboat carrying 11 people, including nine suspected trafficking victims, capsized near Canibugan Island, Balabac, Palawan. This incident occurred on June 8, ending the dreams of those hoping to find jobs overseas.
The motorbanca named Kumpit was en route to Malaysia when strong waves caused it to flip. The nine passengers, originating from various parts of the Philippines such as Olongapo City, Zambales, Calamba, Laguna, and others, were promised high-paying jobs through a secret route in Bataraza, Palawan. They were first brought by a white van to a coastal pickup point after arriving in Puerto Princesa City following a seven-hour land journey.
Boat Capsize Leaves One Dead, Others Missing
While on the water, the boat suffered engine failure and began drifting. The skipper jumped into the sea to seek help but never returned. Survivors clung to the overturned boat but became separated. Sadly, a female passenger from Cavite drowned. Seven victims and one crew member were rescued by local fishermen and concerned citizens, but two people remain missing: an unidentified passenger and the 41-year-old skipper, a Balabac resident.
The PCG immediately deployed the BRP Malapascua (MRRV-4403) and a high-speed response boat to search for the missing individuals. They also launched a follow-up operation after hearing from survivors about another group preparing to travel via the same illegal route.
Second Group Rescued, Investigation Underway
The second batch, composed of ten individuals, was found and rescued in Rio Tuba, Bataraza. Although they claimed to be tourists, authorities are investigating their true identities and potential links to trafficking. The PCG is working alongside local police to verify these findings.
PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan has ordered intensified coastal and sea patrols at known embarkation points to prevent further illegal departures. He also emphasized the importance of coordinating with local officials to strengthen monitoring and checkpoints.
This heartbreaking event highlights the risks faced by those lured by false promises of overseas employment through illegal routes. Authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to stop human trafficking activities in Palawan.
