Human Trafficking Victims Rescued in Zamboanga City
ZAMBOANGA CITY – In a significant anti-human trafficking operation, authorities rescued 38 potential victims, including four minors, and arrested three suspected illegal recruiters on Friday night. The rescue highlighted ongoing efforts to combat trafficking syndicates in the region.
The Zamboanga City Maritime Police Station reported that the victims were found around 9:30 p.m. aboard the wooden ferry ML J-Sayang, docked at a private wharf in Barangay Baliwasan. The vessel was reportedly preparing to set sail for Taganak Island in the Turtle Islands group.
Arrests Highlight Syndicate Tactics
During the operation, three suspected recruiters were caught trying to blend in with the victims — a deceptive strategy often used by trafficking groups to avoid detection. Local authorities emphasized that this operation exposed the continued use of such cunning tactics by illegal recruiters.
The inter-agency Zamboanga City Sea-Based Anti-Trafficking Task Force (ZCSBATTF) revealed that many of the rescued individuals had been lured by false promises of employment opportunities in countries like China and Malaysia. Despite being intercepted earlier by immigration officials, these victims were rerouted through secret channels, underscoring the persistent challenges in fighting human trafficking.
Ongoing Investigation and Victim Care
“Investigation is ongoing to determine those possibly behind the illegal activity,” said task force representatives. Meanwhile, the rescued victims were taken to the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Processing Center for Displaced Persons in Barangay Mampang for immediate care and assistance.
Authorities continue to strengthen surveillance and cooperation among agencies to prevent further trafficking attempts in the region. This operation serves as a reminder of the relentless efforts needed to dismantle trafficking rings and protect vulnerable communities.
