Hundreds Seek Rabies Shots After Viral Death Reports
ZAMBOANGA CITY — Hundreds of residents rushed to the local Animal Bite Center after viral reports of rabies-related deaths sparked alarm. The surge in patients seeking rabies shots has overwhelmed the center at a government hospital in the city.
On Monday, June 2, around 250 individuals visited the Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC) Animal Bite Center to get vaccinated. Two days earlier, nearly 300 patients had already sought the anti-rabies vaccine, sources said. Many of those seeking treatment were bitten by animals, mostly dogs, in the past year.
Fear Drives Surge in Rabies Vaccinations
According to local health officials, the sudden increase in patients was triggered by widely shared videos and photos showing rabies victims displaying symptoms before passing away. “After seeing those heartbreaking images, people hurried to get vaccinated,” said a community health worker.
Medical practitioners praised the heightened awareness brought by anti-rabies campaigns. However, they expressed concern over the limited supply of rabies vaccines amid the growing demand. The shortage poses a challenge as more people seek urgent vaccinations.
Managing Vaccine Supply Amid Rising Demand
Health authorities are working to secure additional vaccine stocks to meet the surge. They urge residents to seek immediate treatment following any animal bite and not delay vaccination, emphasizing its life-saving importance.
The community is reminded to remain vigilant and report any suspicious animal behavior to prevent further rabies cases. Meanwhile, the local government continues to support vaccination drives and awareness programs.
