ICC Prosecution Submits Seventh Evidence Batch Against Duterte
The International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecution has handed over the seventh batch of evidence against former president Rodrigo Duterte. This move advances the ongoing case concerning alleged crimes against humanity linked to Duterte’s controversial war on drugs.
In a document dated June 4, ICC deputy prosecutor Mame Mandiaye Niang confirmed that 129 new items were submitted to the defense on May 30. However, these documents have been classified as confidential, restricting public access. “The Annexes to this filing are classified as ‘Confidential’ as they refer to confidential evidence disclosed inter partes,” the filing stated.
Details of the Latest Evidence Submission
The newest batch divides the evidence into three main categories: modes of liability during Duterte’s presidency, barangay clearance operations under his administration, and background materials intended to assist in defense preparation. Specifically, there are 44 items related to liability, 32 concerning clearance operations, and 53 background documents.
Since the evidence disclosure period began on April 30, the prosecution has submitted a total of 267 items. The court has set a deadline of July 1 for all evidence to be disclosed. Any submissions after this date will not be considered during the confirmation of charges hearing scheduled for September 23.
Duterte’s Detention and Charges
Rodrigo Duterte has been detained in The Hague since March 12, following his arrest in the Philippines the day before. The hearing before Pre-Trial Chamber I will determine if the charges against him will be confirmed.
He faces 43 counts of murder linked to the drug war he aggressively pursued during his presidency. Official figures estimate around 6,000 deaths, mostly among impoverished communities. However, human rights groups argue that the actual number of extrajudicial killings could range from 20,000 to 30,000.
Authorities maintain that the operations were aimed at curbing illegal drugs, but critics have condemned the campaign for its brutality and disregard for due process.
