Iloilo Airport Rehabilitation Launches with Government Support
ILOILO CITY – The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) have officially begun the Iloilo Airport rehabilitation. This project, backed by a P190-million allocation from the 2024 General Appropriations Act, marks a significant step in upgrading airport facilities across the country. Local officials noted that the Iloilo Airport rehabilitation aims to improve safety, efficiency, and passenger comfort.
DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon confirmed during a recent airport inspection that the rehabilitation work is underway this year. “This is part of our commitment to ensure that airports across the country are safe, efficient, and passenger-friendly,” said CAAP Director General Raul del Rosario.
Major Upgrades in Two Phases
The Iloilo Airport rehabilitation is divided into two main phases. The first phase, which receives P133 million, focuses on enhancing the passenger terminal building. Originally opened in June 2007, the terminal has long been operating beyond its capacity. Upon completion, it will accommodate 675 domestic and 407 international passengers, a significant increase from the current 367 domestic and 360 international capacity.
Upgrades include repairing and replacing furniture, restrooms, fire alarms, and the passenger boarding bridge. The project also covers improvements to the departure conveyor, escalators, and air conditioning units to provide a more comfortable environment.
Addressing Passenger Comfort and Runway Maintenance
The second phase, funded with P37.55 million, involves installing three new chillers to support the air conditioning system. Passengers have raised concerns over warm terminal areas for more than two years, and this upgrade aims to resolve that issue.
In addition to the terminal improvements, the government will perform an asphalt overlay on the runway. This maintenance work will ensure safer and smoother aircraft operations.
These rehabilitation efforts reflect the government’s dedication to modernizing airport infrastructure and enhancing the overall travel experience. Local leaders observed that these improvements will benefit both domestic and international travelers passing through Iloilo.
