Calls for Probe into Iloilo City Bantay Dagat Shooting
A city councilor is urging an immediate investigation into the shooting of a fisherman allegedly by members of the Iloilo City Bantay Dagat. The incident has raised serious concerns among local leaders and residents.
Reynaldo Manlangit, 52, from Purok Kagaykay, Barangay 2, was wounded and is currently receiving medical care after being shot on Sunday in the waters between Guimaras and Bacolod. Reports suggest that the Iloilo City Bantay Dagat, who patrol the area, may have been involved in the shooting.
Councilor Pushes for Resolution
On Monday, Councilor Jude Thaddeus Sayson announced that his office is preparing a Sangguniang Panlungsod resolution. The resolution aims to investigate the shooting and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Sayson emphasized that even if the fisherman had entered Iloilo City waters without permission, the proper procedure would be to arrest him, not to shoot. “Kung masakpan man gani siya sa sulod sa Iloilo, dapat arestuhon siya, dili patyon,” he said.
Possible Diplomatic Talks Between Cities
If the investigation confirms the involvement of Iloilo City Bantay Dagat personnel, Sayson intends to ask Bacolod City Mayor Greg Gasataya to coordinate with Iloilo City’s mayor to address the issue diplomatically. This step aims to maintain peace and order between the neighboring cities.
Initial Incident Details and Police Investigation
Initial accounts reveal that the Bantay Dagat boat attempted to arrest the fisherman, but he tried to escape. During the pursuit, the fisherman was reportedly shot. Police Major Eugene Tolentino, head of Bacolod Police Station 2, confirmed that authorities are still investigating whether Bantay Dagat members were responsible for the shooting.
The Bacolod police are working closely with the Philippine National Police Maritime Group to gather all facts related to the case.
