Iloilo City Refutes Quarantine Claims Following Monkeypox Case
Iloilo City officials have firmly denied reports claiming that the city is currently under General Community Quarantine after a positive monkeypox case was identified. The claim has been circulating on social media, causing unnecessary alarm among residents. However, sources familiar with the matter have confirmed that these reports are inaccurate and misleading.
Joy Fantilaga-Gorzal, spokesperson for the city mayor, emphasized, “It is fake news.” She explained that the posts circulating on May 30 used outdated information from 2020 and altered it to create confusion. “It was confirmed by management to be an old post dating back to that time. It is clearly being taken out of context and altered to mislead the public,” she added.
City Officials Urge Calm and Responsible Sharing
Authorities urge the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified or outdated information. They remind everyone to practice responsible digital citizenship to help curb misinformation. As Gorzal said, “Stop spreading fake news.”
Meanwhile, the Iloilo City Health Office (ICHO) confirmed that the positive monkeypox case was locally transmitted, as the patient had no travel history. Additionally, ICHO clarified that there is currently no community transmission of monkeypox in the city.
Understanding the Current Health Situation
Although the presence of a locally transmitted monkeypox case is concerning, health officials stress that the situation is under control. They continue to monitor the patient closely and conduct contact tracing to prevent further spread. Community leaders and health experts encourage residents to stay informed through official channels and follow health protocols.
In summary, Iloilo City is not under General Community Quarantine due to monkeypox. The city government and health authorities remain vigilant and committed to safeguarding public health while combating misinformation that can cause unnecessary fear.
