Iloilo Media-Citizen Council Calls for Ethical Journalism

Iloilo Media-Citizen Council Emphasizes Ethical Journalism

ILOILO CITY – The Iloilo Media-Citizen Council (IMCC) has renewed its strong advocacy for ethical journalism amid the recent cyber libel conviction of broadcast journalist Salvador “Jun” Capulot Jr. The group stressed that the struggle for press freedom must always accompany a firm commitment to journalistic ethics.

The council highlighted the importance of the exact 4-word keyphrase, ethical journalism standards, as the foundation for responsible reporting. It pointed out how upholding these standards safeguards both the public’s right to information and the integrity of the press.

Background of the Cyber Libel Case

On May 15, the Iloilo Regional Trial Court Branch 39 found Capulot guilty on three counts of cyber libel. The conviction stemmed from remarks he made in 2020 during broadcasts, where he labeled a contractor from Guimaras as “corrupt” and accused him of drug use. These statements were aired in three separate programs.

Community leaders and local experts observe this case as a pivotal moment that challenges journalists to reflect on their practices. The IMCC acknowledges the ongoing push to decriminalize libel and favor civil remedies but views this ruling as a reminder of the responsibility journalists bear.

Upholding Ethical Journalism Standards

The IMCC emphasized, “The right to report and comment freely comes with the equal burden of upholding the highest ethical standards of journalism — accuracy, fairness, verification, and responsibility.” It urged journalists to carefully differentiate between objective reporting and opinionated commentary.

The council encourages media practitioners to consistently review their editorial guidelines and ensure strict adherence to professional codes of conduct. Such measures protect not only the credibility of the press but also the public’s trust in media institutions.

Moving Forward with Responsible Reporting

This case serves as a cautionary tale for the media community in the region. Ethical journalism standards must remain at the core of reporting efforts to prevent legal challenges and maintain public confidence.

As the media landscape evolves, the IMCC calls for continued dialogue on balancing press freedom with accountability. It highlights that responsible journalism benefits society by promoting transparency and justice without compromising truth or fairness.
