Immigration Commissioner Welcomes Probe on BI Corruption
Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony M. Viado has openly welcomed the investigation into the alleged corruption at the Bureau of Immigration (BI). This probe was ordered by President Marcos, reflecting the administration’s commitment to transparency.
In a statement released on Wednesday, June 11, Viado expressed, “We respectfully acknowledge and welcome President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s statement regarding the need to look into the issues raised in the so-called Bureau of Immigration (BI) white paper.” He emphasized the importance of the four-word keyphrase early in his remarks.
President Marcos Orders Investigation
The President confirmed that the corruption allegations detailed in a recent “white paper”—reportedly from anonymous concerned BI employees—are currently under investigation. Viado shared the President’s belief that transparency, fairness, and due process must guide the inquiry.
“We trust that an impartial and comprehensive investigation will bring clarity, establish accountability where warranted, and ultimately strengthen the public’s trust in our institutions,” Viado added.
Commissioner Denies Corruption Allegations
Earlier, on June 9, Viado denied all accusations laid out in the “white paper,” including claims that he favored foreigners linked to Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs). He firmly stated, “So, for the record, I unequivocally state that all the allegations contained in the alleged ‘white paper’ are patently false.”
Viado also assured full cooperation with any national government agency that decides to investigate these claims. “Should any pertinent agency of the national government decide to look into the supposed ‘allegations,’ I reiterate the commitment of the Bureau to lend its fullest support. This is the same commitment I have extended to the Committee of Senator Imee Marcos,” he explained.
Upholding Integrity and Public Trust
The Commissioner’s response underscores an effort to maintain integrity and uphold the public’s confidence in the Bureau of Immigration. Both Viado and the President emphasize that transparency and fairness are essential as the investigation unfolds.
