President Marcos confidently addressed the ongoing impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, emphasizing that the process will continue seamlessly into the 20th Congress. During an interview on June 10, the president explained that the impeachment proceedings, even if initiated in the 19th Congress, cannot be completed before the new senators take office. “Because there is no way that even if they start the trial now that they will finish it before the new Senators come in. Well, again, the Senators will decide,” he added.
Senate’s Role and Peaceful Transition
President Marcos stressed his neutral stance regarding the impeachment trial. He noted that the Senate, led by Senate President Francis Escudero, is handling the matter and that his administration is closely observing efforts to ensure a smooth transition between Congress sessions. “We are watching of course what the Senate President Chiz Escudero is doing to try to make it as peaceful a transition as possible from this Congress to the next,” he shared.
He reiterated that the impeachment case has been under Senate consideration for several months after moving from the House of Representatives. “This is really a function of the Senate right now. So, we leave it to them. It has moved already from the House, it has now been in the Senate for a few months,” President Marcos said.
