Government Promises Better Public Transportation by Late 2025
MANILA, Philippines — Filipino commuters can look forward to improved public transportation by late 2025, sources said. This optimistic outlook comes as key phases of the government’s major infrastructure projects in the transportation sector are set to be completed.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. shared this update during the third part of his BBM Podcast: Episode 2, which aired on his social media accounts last Friday. When asked about relief for daily commuters enduring long waits and overcrowded trains, the president expressed deep empathy, recalling his own experience riding the MRT.
“I’ve felt that. One time, we rode the MRT, and once you get inside, if your hand ends up here, you won’t be able to move it anymore,” he said, demonstrating how packed the trains can get. He added, “I was talking with the passengers. One of them said, ‘Sir, it’s really like this every day.’ I know—it’s extremely hot and very crowded.”
Short-Term Measures and Long-Term Infrastructure Projects
The Marcos administration is already implementing initiatives to ease commuter burdens. These include the “1 plus 3 promo” on Sundays across the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 and Light Rail Transit Lines 1 and 2, as well as a 50 percent fare discount for students and senior citizens.
But the government’s focus remains on long-term solutions. Major projects such as the Metro Manila Subway and MRT-7 are underway, with some phases expected to be completed by late this year or next year, local leaders noted. The MRT Line 7 operator, San Miguel Corporation, plans to start trial runs by year-end.
Progress on Metro Manila Subway and LRT Expansion
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon recently reported progress in securing right-of-way agreements, a critical step to advance the Metro Manila Subway Project. The project aims to significantly improve transit capacity and reduce travel time across the capital region.
Additionally, plans are in motion to build a new LRT-1 station in Bacoor. Officials hope this will accommodate more passengers as the railway extends to Cavite by 2030, a development expected to ease commuting for many residents.
Commuters’ Hope for the Future
While daily ridership challenges persist, these infrastructure advances offer hope for smoother, more comfortable rides in the coming years. Authorities continue to work toward modernizing and expanding transport networks, easing congestion, and providing affordable access for all Filipinos.
