Improving Quezon City’s Bike and Pedestrian Lanes Urgently

DOTr Prioritizes Quezon City’s Bike and Pedestrian Lanes

MANILA, Philippines — In a decisive move to boost active transport infrastructure, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) revealed plans to enhance Quezon City’s bike and pedestrian lanes. Officials emphasized the importance of these improvements to promote safer, more accessible mobility for commuters and pedestrians alike.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon led the recent inspection of bike lanes around Quezon City Circle, accompanied by Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman and House Transportation Committee Chair Franz Pumaren. The team assessed the current facilities and discussed strategies to expand and upgrade the active transport network.

Commitment to Safer, Greener Commutes

“We really need to do this. The president himself said, let’s think of commuters. We really need to change our thinking,” Dizon emphasized during the inspection. This statement reflects a growing commitment to prioritize the needs of daily travelers in urban settings.

The DOTr plans to collaborate closely with the Quezon City local government to expand bike lanes and improve pedestrian pathways. Additionally, the project includes the construction of Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) stops and the establishment of a directional island at the busy intersection of East Avenue and Elliptical Road.

Setting New Standards for Active Transport

According to sources familiar with the initiative, these enhancements aim to create a safer, greener environment for commuters, pedestrians, and cyclists. “This really sets the standard for our commuters, pedestrians and bikers—they feel safe, there’s greenery. We will imitate this elsewhere,” Dizon remarked, underscoring the replicable nature of the project.

Aligning with National Transport Goals

This effort aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to develop commuter-based services that focus on safety, accessibility, and ease of mobility. Local leaders noted that the improvements in Quezon City serve as a pilot model for similar projects nationwide.

Community members expressed optimism that the enhanced bike and pedestrian lanes will encourage more Filipinos to adopt active transport modes, ultimately reducing traffic congestion and pollution.
