Independence Day Demonstrations Challenge Balikatan Exercises
On June 12, progressive groups and organizations held Independence Day demonstrations along T.M. Kalaw Avenue in Ermita, Manila City. Over 2,000 protesters gathered to express their concerns about the negative effects brought by the Balikatan exercises on their livelihoods.
The Balikatan exercises have sparked controversy, with many participants calling attention to the increased military presence and its impact on local communities. Protesters also voiced strong opposition to what they described as the intensified military intervention of the United States in the Philippines.
Voices Against Military Intervention and Foreign Policy
Aside from opposing the Balikatan exercises, the demonstrators condemned the U.S. government’s alleged complicity in Israel’s ongoing attacks on Palestine. The crowd’s slogans reflected their solidarity with Palestinians and their call for justice.
Some protesters also shouted “convict,” referencing the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte. These chants underscored the diverse political issues driving the march.
Peaceful Dispersal and Police Response
Manila Police District (MPD) operatives promptly blocked the paths of the militant groups to maintain order. Despite the high turnout, the demonstration ended peacefully, with protesters dispersing before 1 p.m. Authorities reported no arrests or injuries as of this writing.
The event highlighted the persistent concerns over the Balikatan exercises and broader foreign policy impacts on the Philippines. Local leaders noted the importance of peaceful assembly in expressing dissent on national issues.
