Iriga City Celebrates 57th Charter Anniversary
Iriga City proudly commemorated its 57th Charter Anniversary with a series of vibrant activities that showcased the community’s spirit and heritage. The celebration featured a concelebrated Mass, civic and military parades, and cultural performances held at the city plaza. Central to the event was a heartfelt tribute to one of Iriga’s most celebrated daughters, the late “Superstar” and National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, Nora Aunor.
Honoring Nora Aunor’s Legacy
The city government also held the annual Sumagang Awards, which recognize individuals and groups who have made outstanding contributions to local development. Attending as the guest of honor was Christopher Ian Villamayor de Leon, Nora Aunor’s son, who described his mother’s life as “a symbol of the Filipino dream.”
De Leon expressed gratitude to Mayor Wilfredo Rex C. Oliva and city officials for their ongoing efforts to preserve and celebrate his mother’s legacy. These initiatives include plans for a museum and library dedicated to Aunor, the installation of a statue at the Philippine National Railways station, and the official declaration of May 21—her birthday—as “Nora Aunor Day.” Community members noted that these projects will ensure that her contributions to arts and culture remain an inspiration for generations.
Mayor Oliva Commends Growing Community Participation
Mayor Oliva welcomed De Leon’s presence, calling him the “Man of Honor” for fulfilling his promise to attend. The mayor also highlighted the increased involvement this year from schools, barangays, and youth organizations, which added energy and enthusiasm to the festivities. Local leaders observed that this growing participation reflects the city’s strong sense of unity and pride in its history.
Special Holiday Declared for Charter Anniversary
Earlier, Malacañang declared September 3 a special non-working holiday in Iriga City through Proclamation No. 996. This official recognition marks the city’s transformation from a municipality to a chartered city in 1968. Officials reported that this declaration allows residents to fully engage in the anniversary events and reflect on Iriga’s progress and achievements.
The 57th Charter Anniversary celebration in Iriga City not only honored its rich history but also strengthened community bonds and highlighted the city’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage. Through honoring Nora Aunor and celebrating local achievements, the city continues to inspire pride among its residents.
