Iriga City Honored for Strengthening MSME Ecosystem
Iriga City earned a distinguished national award as the only local government unit recognized at the Presidential Recognition for Outstanding Development Partners ceremony held at Malacañang Palace’s Heroes Hall. This accolade highlights the city’s exceptional efforts in strengthening MSME ecosystem development.
Mayor Wilfredo Rex Oliva, together with Amor Soneja-Auro, officer-in-charge of the Local Economic Development and Investments Promotion Office (LEDIPO), accepted the award under the Strengthening MSME Ecosystem category. Officials reported that this recognition underscores the city’s commitment to fostering micro, small, and medium enterprises through innovative governance.
Project R.E.X.: Raising Business Standards
The award specifically honors Project R.E.X. (Reform for Ease and Excellence): Raising the Standard for Business Service Delivery, a flagship initiative by the city government. This program aims to simplify administrative processes and improve support services for MSMEs, creating a more conducive environment for business growth.
Through comprehensive regulatory reforms, business-friendly policies, and investor incentives, Iriga City has successfully established a streamlined Business One-Stop Shop (BOSS). This facility serves as a centralized hub that accelerates permit processing and business registration, making it easier for entrepreneurs to launch and expand their ventures.
National Officials Celebrate Local Success
The prestigious award was presented by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, with Trade Secretary Christina A. Roque and MSMED Council vice chair Joey Concepcion, founder of Go Negosyo, assisting in the ceremony. Regional and provincial directors from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) also attended to honor Iriga’s achievements.
Local leaders noted the significance of this recognition as a testament to effective public-private partnerships and dedicated local governance.
Mayor Oliva Reflects on the Recognition
Mayor Oliva expressed heartfelt gratitude for the award, emphasizing the rigorous evaluation process undertaken by the board of judges. “The feeling is overwhelming, especially because this recognition underwent due process,” he shared during a phone interview with community members.
He highlighted ongoing city programs focused on financial literacy, financial stability, and basic life support training. These initiatives provide essential skills to MSME owners, while safety and convenience remain top priorities for business operators and investors alike.
Strengthening Investor Confidence and Security
Security coordination between the city government and the Philippine National Police has been intensified to foster a safer environment. “Trust and confidence matter among MSMEs,” Oliva stated, underlining the importance of a secure business climate for sustained economic growth.
Thanks to these efforts, the city has experienced increased investor activity and improved local revenue, allowing it to progress from a 4th-class to a 3rd-class city. This development reflects the tangible impact of the strengthened MSME ecosystem on local economic advancement.
A Model of Effective Governance and Collaboration
Mayor Oliva concluded that the award is not only a victory for Iriga’s residents but also a clear example of what can be achieved through effective local governance and strong collaboration between the public and private sectors. Community members recognized this milestone as a beacon of progress for other cities aiming to empower MSMEs.
