Manila Mayor Orders MPIO Facebook Page Turnover
Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno has urgently called for the turnover of the Manila Public Information Office Facebook page. He instructed the city’s chief legal officer to formally request Meta to transfer control of the page from former employees to current officials. This move aims to regain access to an important government communication platform.
During a meeting with the Manila City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, City Public Information Officer E-jhay Talagtag revealed that the MPIO Facebook page remains in the hands of previous city hall staff. Mayor Moreno described this as a form of hostage-taking and pledged to take legal action against those withholding control.
Mayor Moreno’s Firm Stand on Facebook Page Turnover
“I’m directing the chief city legal attorney to write Meta because this is government property,” Moreno said. “It cannot be held hostage by previous employees of the city hall. Charges will be filed against those blackmailing the city government.” He emphasized that the authority to manage the page must be transferred to Talagtag immediately.
The mayor stressed that the Facebook page was created not for political purposes but to serve as a vital channel for public information dissemination. “We are talking about where the people will get their information in times of crisis,” he explained. “We are being held hostage by previous employees who are protected by civil service rules.”
Current Status and Interim Measures for Manila MPIO Facebook Page
A quick review of the MPIO Facebook page showed its last post dated June 30 at 11:04 a.m., a video about a flushing operation. Notably, newly elected officials officially assumed office shortly after, at 12:01 p.m. the same day. This timeline further highlights the delay in handing over the page control.
While awaiting the resolution, Mayor Moreno announced that he will use his personal Facebook account to share official city announcements. “As long as the MPIO Facebook page is held hostage, announcements for the city will be posted here,” he said.
Local leaders and sources noted that the mayor’s firm directive reflects the urgency of restoring proper communication channels for Manila residents, especially during emergencies. The retrieval of the Facebook page is seen as a critical step toward transparent governance and timely public service.
