Israeli Ambassador Prioritizes Safety of Filipinos Amid Conflict

Israeli Ambassador Emphasizes Safety of Filipinos Amid Conflict

Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines Ilan Fluss has assured that the safety of foreigners, especially Filipinos, remains the top priority amid the escalating violence between Israel and Iran. During an online press conference on June 14, Fluss highlighted Israel’s commitment to protecting Filipinos caught in the unrest.

“The safety and security of foreigners in Israel, particularly Filipinos, is our top priority,” Fluss said. “We urge Filipinos in Israel to follow instructions from their home front command, as these guidelines will save lives.”

He added, “We are committed to ensuring Filipinos in Israel receive the same protection and care as any other person in the country. Every life matters to us.”

Filipino Community Feels Safe Despite Tensions

The ambassador shared that the Israeli Embassy in Manila maintains close contact not just with the government but also with the Filipino community in Israel. According to his updates, Filipinos generally feel safe and are following safety protocols diligently.

“From what I hear, they feel fine and are receiving appropriate hospitality from Israeli authorities,” he explained. “Whether they are overseas Filipino workers, tourists, or participants in training programs, they report feeling comfortable and secure.”

Some had postponed their return trips to the Philippines but remained calm and cooperative. “There is no panic or pressure; they understand the situation and follow instructions carefully,” Fluss noted.

Operational Embassy and Security Measures

Despite the ongoing conflict, the Israeli Embassy in the Philippines continues to operate. However, Fluss mentioned that internal assessments are underway to evaluate security needs, especially since Israeli diplomats have become potential targets.

“The embassy is not closed, but we are reviewing the situation to decide how to proceed,” he said. “We will not take unnecessary risks and will follow security protocols established by our headquarters.”

The ambassador also expressed his personal sense of safety and gratitude toward the Filipino people. “I have always felt very safe and welcomed here,” he said. “At the same time, we recognize the global threats against Israeli diplomats and are taking precautions in coordination with Philippine authorities to ensure everyone’s security.”

Working Closely with Philippine Agencies

Fluss emphasized ongoing collaboration with relevant Philippine agencies to safeguard Israeli diplomats and nationals in the country. “Our joint efforts help maintain a secure environment for all,” he added.

Calls for De-escalation Amid Heightened Tensions

The ambassador expressed Israel’s desire for de-escalation but stressed that it can only happen once the immediate threats to Israel are removed.

“We look forward to calming the situation, but only when there is no longer an imminent danger to the state of Israel,” Fluss said.

He accused Iran of planning to annihilate Israel, which prompted recent Israeli strikes. On June 9, Israel targeted Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility, killing senior military commanders. Iran retaliated with airstrikes on Israeli cities Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, resulting in explosions.

Regional Context and Ongoing Conflict

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the attack was necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, despite Iran’s claims that its nuclear program is peaceful.

Iran is allied with Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, both of which have suffered heavy losses in recent conflicts with Israel. Iran’s Supreme Leader called Israel’s actions a “declaration of war,” with officials warning there will be no safe place in Israel and that revenge would be severe.

Recent reports confirm that Israel and Iran exchanged missile strikes early Sunday, continuing the cycle of violence.
