Israeli National Drowns in Biliran Sea
TACLOBAN CITY – A 74-year-old Israeli national tragically drowned in the sea off Barangay Matanggo, Almeria, Biliran, on Tuesday, May 20. The incident occurred near the popular Soyin Beach Resort, where the victim was a frequent visitor.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the victim had been a regular guest at Soyin Beach Resort in Barangay Talahid, Almeria, since 2016. He usually stayed for about six months before returning to Israel. Resort staff shared that he often swam daily and would typically return to his room by 4 p.m.
Search and Rescue Efforts
However, on Monday, resort employees noticed that the visitor had not come back after going for his usual swim. Concerned, they sought help from the Naval Coast Guard, which immediately launched a search and rescue operation. Despite their efforts, the victim’s body was not initially recovered.
Local fishermen later found his body floating in the sea. An initial post-mortem examination revealed minor abrasions on his face and head, confirming drowning as the cause of death. Community leaders noted the victim had a history of fatigue and had previously been rescued at sea by the Coast Guard and residents last March.
Community Impact and Safety Reminder
The tragic death of this Israeli national has raised awareness about swimming safety, especially for elderly visitors. Resort staff emphasized the importance of monitoring swimmers, particularly those with underlying health conditions.
This incident serves as a solemn reminder to both locals and tourists to exercise caution when swimming in open waters.
