It All Started In May Shines with Debut Single and Unique Sound

It All Started In May: A Fresh Voice in Local Music

The local music scene is alive with diverse acts eager to share their art with listeners. Among these emerging talents, It All Started In May stands out with their growing popularity. They first caught attention on TikTok, where they posted unique covers of classic OPM hits like “Manila” by Hotdog and “Your Song” by Parokya ni Edgar. This four-word keyphrase perfectly captures the essence of their journey.

This group from Cavite consists of Red on guitar and lead vocals, Jai on keyboard, JP on bass and vocals, Pau on guitar and vocals, and Mikee on drums. Interestingly, Red, Jai, JP, and Mikee are students at National University Dasmariñas, while Pau serves as a professor there. Their band name reflects their formation last year in May.

The Band’s Musical Roots and Debut Release

Drawing inspiration from the sound and style of the 1970s, their music carries a nostalgic yet fresh vibe. Their debut single, “O’ Kay Tamis,” perfectly illustrates this blend. The launch took place at the Street Kohi cafe in Diliman on May 23, where the band expressed gratitude for the support they’ve received.

According to local sources familiar with the group, Mikee described the overwhelming experience: “Sobrang overwhelming po para sa amin kasi very new po ito sa amin especially we’re just college kids, and kasi lahat naman po ng musicians dumadaan sa ganito and we’re just so thankful that we get to experience this with Universal Records.” This highlights how new yet exciting the journey has been for them.

Meanwhile, Pau shared his unique perspective as both a professor and band member: “Actually parang inaya lang po ako nila mag vocals for their band during an event, and eventually naman po na enjoy ko naman doing this music thing with them.” His involvement adds an interesting dynamic to the group.

Crafting “O’ Kay Tamis” and Building Their Sound

The creative process behind “O’ Kay Tamis” was spontaneous and organic. Red revealed that the melody came to him during a shower, a moment he often uses to compose music: “Mahilig po kasi talaga magbuo ng melody kapag naliligo po ako, in that way parang tinatandaan ko lang po, tapos isasalpak ko na po yung gitara ko. Then pinarinig ko po sa bandmates ko, then dun na po namin nabuo yung kanta.” From this simple spark, the band collaborated to complete the song.

Since then, they have been actively writing and recording original material, eager to carve out their place in the industry. With their distinct sound, growing fanbase, and energetic performances, It All Started In May is positioning themselves as a fresh act to watch.

Their story is a testament to how youthful passion and dedication can make waves in today’s music world. As they continue to evolve, many expect their influence on the local music scene to grow.
