Japan is set to boost the Philippine Coast Guard’s capabilities with five new 97-meter multi-role response vessels (MRRVs). This exciting development was confirmed by the PCG, revealing Japan’s commitment to help expand its fleet.
The first of these powerful vessels is slated to arrive in 2027. Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan, head of the PCG, shared that these additional ships will greatly enhance their ability to patrol and secure the country’s exclusive economic zones (EEZ).
The visit of Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru to Manila’s PCG National Headquarters added a dramatic flair to the maritime partnership. There, he witnessed a gripping arresting technique demonstration between the PCG and Japan Coast Guard aboard the BRP Teresa Magbanua.
Just a day earlier, Shigeru met with Philippine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., where both leaders underscored the importance of deepening defense ties, economic cooperation, and ongoing support for development projects.
This growing alliance signals a stronger, safer future for the Philippines at sea—and the stakes have never been higher. Keep watching as this partnership unfolds.
