Subsidized Rice Program Eases Burden on Drivers
Jeepney and tricycle drivers can now breathe easier thanks to their inclusion in the government’s subsidized rice program. This initiative, aimed at helping transport workers cope with rising expenses, offers rice at an affordable price of P20 per kilogram. Officials reported that this program will officially start on September 16.
Local leaders noted that rising fuel costs have heavily impacted jeepney and tricycle drivers, making it difficult for them to meet their families’ basic needs. The subsidized rice program is designed to ease their financial stress by providing access to quality rice at a lower cost.
Program Details and Pilot Implementation
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. announced that the program will initially be piloted in five cities, targeting transport workers endorsed by the Department of Transportation. These workers will be eligible to purchase up to 10 kilograms of rice per month from 212 Kadiwa ng Pangulo outlets and accredited local government sites.
Community members expressed optimism about the program, highlighting how it could significantly improve their daily lives. “With the help of the Department of Agriculture and the Kadiwa ng Pangulo, our drivers can breathe more easily and take home affordable and quality rice for their loved ones,” a local official said.
Expanding Support for Transport Workers
House Speaker Martin Romualdez emphasized the importance of this program, noting that jeepney and tricycle drivers have been among the hardest hit by the increase in petrol prices. By including them in the subsidized rice program, the government aims to provide tangible relief to these essential workers.
Local government units have also stepped up, with the municipality of Argao recently launching rice sales at P20 per kilo as part of a broader provincial initiative. This effort aligns with the national program’s goals to make staple goods more accessible to vulnerable sectors.
Looking Ahead
As the pilot program rolls out, officials will monitor its impact and explore ways to expand coverage to more transport workers across the country. The hope is that this initiative will serve as a model for future social support programs aimed at easing the financial burdens of frontline workers.
