Jessica Soho Celebrates 40 Years of Journalism Excellence

Jessica Soho: A Four-Decade Journey in Journalism

Jessica Soho never intended to become a journalist. Initially drawn to Political Science with aspirations of becoming a lawyer, she shifted her path due to the challenging math requirements in law school. Opting for journalism instead—largely because it demanded only one math subject—she often jokes, “I am an accidental journalist, motivated firstly by my fear or phobia of Math.” Yet, after 40 years of storytelling, her career hardly seems accidental.

From covering coup attempts and typhoons to reporting from dangerous conflict zones, Soho has consistently prioritized truth over fame. Her dedication raised the standards of journalism in the Philippines, making her a respected figure in the industry. This year marks her 40th year in the field, prompting the launch of a digital archive titled “Jessica Soho @40: Telling the Story of Filipinos.” This collection features exclusive reports and impactful stories that have shaped national dialogue and given voice to marginalized communities. New content is released weekly on a popular public affairs channel’s YouTube platform.

The Power of Stories in Journalism

Throughout her career, Soho has encountered both the harsh realities and uplifting moments that journalism reveals. In 1989, her plane vanished en route to Pag-asa Island but was found safe days later after an emergency landing in the Spratlys. In 2002, while reporting in post-war Afghanistan, a landmine exploded just meters from her location. These experiences underscore the risks journalists face in their relentless pursuit of truth.

Yet, not all stories center on conflict. Many focus on compassion and the human spirit. For example, Ranelyn from Bantayan Island was severely malnourished and too small for her favorite dress. After her story aired, assistance poured in, and today she is healthy and back in school.

There is also Daxen from Antique, who suffers from a rare condition but found hope when strangers extended help after learning his story. Raymark from Sultan Kudarat was forced to leave school to work in the fields but returned to his studies following public support sparked by his story. Soho and her team even used scientific methods, including genetics, to help reunite families in cases such as babies switched at birth. She reflects, “Ang ‘word on the street’ natin ay ‘family.’ Importante ang pamilya sa atin. Kaya ‘pag may nabubuo sa tulong ng aming mga programa—hindi lang sa KMJS kundi pati sa mga dati naming show tulad ng ‘Sanay Muling Makapiling’ at ‘Reunions’—dagdag points tayo kay Lord. Corny pakinggan, pero totoo ‘to. Feeling namin para kaming nginingitian ng langit tuwing mayroon kaming nahahanap na nawawala, at nabubuo ulit ang isang pamilyang nawalay sa isa’t isa.”

Trailblazing Achievements in Philippine Journalism

As a pioneering figure in broadcast journalism, Soho has set new standards not only nationally but also internationally. She made history in 1999 by winning the country’s first George Foster Peabody Award for her groundbreaking reports. She earned this prestigious award again in 2014 for her Typhoon Haiyan coverage. Soho is also the first Filipino to be nominated and to win at the New York Festivals TV & Film Awards, securing accolades across all medal categories.

In 2025, her investigative documentary on mining in Homonhon Island earned a Bronze Tower Trophy at the New York Festivals. This same episode was nominated at the 2024 Association for International Broadcasting Awards in London under the Sustainability category. Earlier, her special report on human trafficking won Gold at the ContentAsia Awards for Best Current Affairs Programme Made in Asia.

Her credibility is reflected in being named the “Most Trusted TV Host for News and Current Affairs” for 13 consecutive years by a well-known trusted brands award. She also holds the distinction of being the first alumna of a top university’s College of Mass Communication to receive a prestigious journalism award.

Commitment to Truth and Inspiring Future Journalists

Soho’s philosophy is clear: “Sa lahat ng mga assignment, trabaho, at programa na ibinigay sa akin, wala akong masasabi sa sarili ko na hindi ko itinodo. 100 percent or more. You’re not the story. Ang importante ‘yung story.”

In an age where misinformation spreads quickly, she remains a steadfast symbol of credibility and trust. She continues pursuing stories not for popularity, but because she truly believes in the importance of sharing Filipino experiences. “Aaminin ko, pinanghihinaan din ako ng loob. Pero hindi kasi tamang isuko ang katotohanan. Kailangan itong ipaglaban—lalo na’t marami pa tayong dapat bigyan ng linaw at liwanag sa ating bayan,” she said.

Recently, she addressed thousands of aspiring writers and journalists at a national press conference, urging them to emphasize kindness and integrity alongside accuracy and balance. Reflecting on her career, she shared, “If I have to live my life all over again, pipiliin ko pa rin maging journalist. Basically, because I love telling stories.”

Despite not planning this path, Soho chose to walk it with purpose. For her, every story—no matter how big or small—is a chance to make a difference. For four decades, she has done exactly that.
